This June, the coastal town of Moraira will transform into a spectacular hub for one of the most beloved traditions on the Costa Blanca, its edition of the Moors and Christians Festival.

This event, running from June 5 to June 14, brings ten days of parades, music, gunpowder, and centuries-old pageantry to the streets, castle, and beaches of this beautiful Mediterranean town.

This festival, a religious and cultural staple in many parts of Spain, commemorates the historic battles between the Moors and the Christians, which shaped the history of the Iberian Peninsula during the medieval Reconquista. In many parts of the country, the festivities include reenactments of battles, food, music, festivities, and costumes. Nowadays, the Moors and Christians Festival is a major draw for residents and visitors of the towns celebrating this vibrant and joyful event, and Moraira’s edition will be no different.

The festivities will start on Friday, June 5 with the traditional Pregón de Fiestas, or opening speech, held at the Espai La Senieta. During the following days, a variety of events will take place as the celebrations go into full swing, including a community meal in the Urban Forest with live brass bands accompanying the gathering, an International Music Festival with six live acts, and a concert by the International Choir at Moraira’s Parish Church.

During the latter days of the Festival, the days will get even more exciting; Friday, June 12, will see the reenactment of the spectacular Conquista Mora (Moors Conquest), staged battle in which Moraira Castle, from the Playa l’Ampolla, will be seized. The next evening, on Saturday, the Christians will retaliate with the Reconquista Cristiana, with a display of costumes, processions, and theatrics. Finally, the grand finale will take place on Sunday, June 13, featuring the Great Gala Parade, where all the participating troops from the reenactments will march together in costume through the town, ending in a magnificent fireworks display.

As a bonus, the tail end of the month will see an Andalucian Medieval Market running from June 19 to June 21, and offering visitors a final taste of this history-themed cultural event that lights Moraira up at the beginning of summer. Whether visiting for the first time or a seasoned fan of the Moors and Christians Festival, the Moraira edition will be an unforgettable experience on the Costa Blanca North.

Visitors are heavily encouraged to take part in this blowout event, which will bring light, colour, delicious food and whimsical historical re-enactments to one of the Costa Blanca’s most beautiful towns.
